Scope of this Document

This set of documents has been authored and edited by too many people from too many sources to be adequately attributed. I hope simply saying this is our attempt at collating our experiences building and operating a DNSBL with the collective knowledge of the individual administrators around the world who comprise the news.admin.net-abuse hierarchy.

It has been designed to cover extensively the design and details of a DNSBL along with the surrounding protections and implications of each feature. The aim is to make it a definitive resource for present and future DNSBL maintainers and in some way to help the general public understand more about how DNSBL work and why they are necessary.

That said. If you are considering building your own DNSBL please read the section "Reasons against starting a DNSBL.". Consider joining an existing project instead and providing a mirror if all you want is the experience or prestige.
